THE ODYSSEY - CHAPTER TWO HINTS

Remember, half the fun of the Odyssey is the challenge of using all your Civ2 Skills to assist in overcoming each obstacle. That said, it's better to use this file as an aid than to quit in frustration!

******************************************************************************************

Italy:

1) Yes it's possible to spend time wandering up and down much of the peninsula, but there's nothing to do there! Move along to the Sirens as soon as possible.

******************************************************************************************

Sirens:

1) After killing the message unit, a "Beeswax" unit appears on the island. It only has two moves and no place to land, so attack the Sirens with it immediately. The Sirens won't die, but a path will soon open up.

2) Do not go off exploring with your ship! Keep it adjacent to the Sirens and/or the islands. If it gets trapped outside the slot, you'll have to restart.

3) If you attacked the Message unit and saw the "Potion of Hermes" appear on the island (58,60), then you forgot to run the Odyssey.bat program before starting! Or if you did, you selected "1" instead of "2". You'll have to restart Chapter 2 (Quit, run batch file, select 2, start ody1.sav).

******************************************************************************************

Clashing Rocks:

1) Attack them with your ship, and then sail through.

******************************************************************************************

Scylla and Charybdis:

1) Do NOT attack Charybdis (the whirlpool/waterspout)!

2) When you reach Scylla, attack it with the Sailor Marines (who have amphibious assault capability). Two "Bad" things could happen here:
- No one dies. You miss a minor event, but otherwise not a problem.
- All the Sailor Marines die. Unlikely, but if this happens you can probably still kill the monster using Odysseus. If HE dies, start the sequence over.

******************************************************************************************

Trinacia:

1) Eventually you are going to have to kill one of the cows. No way around it. God help you!

2) When they prepare to leave, Odysseus MUST be the first unit to board the ship. If anyone else is still aboard, get them off. After he's on board, under no circumstances should you activate him! After all the other units board, you'll see that Odysseus is at the bottom of the list. There's a reason why he needs to be there!

******************************************************************************************

Storm:

1) Your ship is trapped, and there's nowhere to go. You can't kill the Storm unit, so don't bother trying. Do NOT activate Odysseus until AFTER the storm attacks and the ship has sunk. The ship is occupying a naval fortification, so all the units will be attacked one-by-one, in order from top to bottom. That's why you want Odysseus safely ensconced at the bottom of the stack!

2) Move the raft over and put Odysseus on board. It can only hold one unit, so everyone else is out of luck. Do not wait around. The Storm will pursue you after everyone else is dead!

******************************************************************************************

Calypso's Palace #1:

1) After Odysseus kills the Message Unit, you might as well fortify him. He is going to be sitting around for "seven years".

2) You are done with the raft, so disband it, send it off in search of the storm, or just hit the space bar every time it wants to move.

3) Do NOT use Odysseus to attack Calypso's Palace! He'll die and you'll have to start over.

******************************************************************************************

Telemachus:

1) Telemachus must attack Athena. This will create the "Black Ship", which is a carrier unit. A good thing, since Telemachus is a fighter unit. Have him "land" on the ship afterward.

2) When you reach Pylos, Telemachus will have to journey toward Sparta via a chain of invisible "camps" (airbases). The helper unit Pisistratus has more range, and should be used to scout for these hidden camps.

3) To kill the message unit near Sparta, Telemachus must be positioned so he is either in the third camp or has moved from the second camp to square 120,92.

4)Pisistratus can leave with Telemachus or stay (fortified) behind. His task is complete.

5) Use Telemachus to kill the second message unit offshore from Pylos. It's an air unit, so only he can do it.

6) The Trireme effect is supposed to eliminate Telemachus and the Black Ship, so don't worry!

******************************************************************************************

Calypso's Palace #2:

1) Odysseus must kill the Hermes unit.

2) Odysseus must be the first to board the sailboat. Again, it's because he needs to be at the bottom of the stack.

******************************************************************************************

Poseidon:

1) You can't kill Poseidon, so there's no use fighting back. Do NOT activate Odysseus until AFTER Poseidon attacks.

2) Have Odysseus board the wreckage (you are protected from further attacks by Ino's Veil) and move toward the shore.

******************************************************************************************

Phaeacia/Ithaca:

1) Kill the message unit and board the Phaeacian Ship.

2) The War God Ares makes a brief appearance in order to capture the city of Circe's Palace. This will eliminate a few of your now useles units which are homed to that city, and also gives you one less thing to worry about as you head for Chapter 3.

3) Sail toward Ithaca, kill the message unit, and complete Chapter 2:
- Save game as "ODY1.sav"
- Exit out of Civ2
- Run the Odyssey.bat file and select "3"
- Restart Civ2
